The part number is stamped on the drum hub, usually visible once you detach the cable; if it’s worn smooth, measure the drum diameter across the grooves (typically 4 inches for residential Genie units) and count the cable wraps at full door height.

The OEM part runs higher but guarantees the groove geometry matches your opener’s travel profile. Signs Your Genie Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
- Door sits crooked when closed. One cable has slipped or stretched more than the other, so the bottom bar tilts toward the side with tension. The drum may have a worn groove that no longer bites the cable evenly.
- Loud clanking or popping during travel. The cable is not seating cleanly in the drum grooves. On Genie screw-drive units, this often means the drum has developed flat spots from metal fatigue.
- Cable unspooled or bunched on one side. The drum’s retaining lip has cracked, or the set screws have loosened and the drum has shifted on the shaft. This is common in Florida after hurricane season when doors cycle more frequently.
- Door rises slowly on one side then jerks level. The weaker cable is stretching under load until the drum catches. The cable itself may be fraying internally even if the outside looks intact.
- Visible rust or green corrosion on the drum hub. Coastal air penetrates the zinc coating. Once rust starts, the drum diameter changes microscopically and cable slip follows.

DIY or Call Us?
There’s a safe middle ground here. You can eyeball the cable for fraying, check whether the drum set screws are tight, and confirm the door is manually balanced by disconnecting the Genie opener and lifting halfway - it should stay put. What you should not do is loosen the cable while the door is loaded, or try to rewind a slipped cable onto a drum under spring tension. The torsion spring above the door holds lethal force. We’ve seen homeowners in Coral Springs and Fort Lauderdale who watched a video, bought a winding bar at Home Depot, and ended up in the ER. The cable and drum sit downstream of that spring. If you’re not trained on torsion release, this is not the project to learn on.
