- The door sticks at a certain height every time. A single damaged roller binds in the track at the same spot. Homeowners often blame the opener, but the opener is fighting a mechanical problem it did not create.
- Visible wear, cracks, or flat spots on the roller wheels. Nylon rollers crack from UV exposure and age; steel rollers flatten from impact or overload. Either way, the wheel no longer rolls, it slides, and that eats the track.

Replacing a bottom roller on a raised door is genuinely dangerous. The bottom bracket is under cable tension, and releasing it without proper winding bars can send the bracket into your hand or face. We have seen the aftermath. The middle and top rollers are simpler, but you still need to secure the door properly and know which rollers carry load at each position.
What you can safely do: inspect the rollers from inside the garage with the door closed, note any cracks or flat spots, and check whether the stem wiggles in the bracket.
